Did you know that Epilepsy is not mental illness ?

Epilepsy is not a mental illness—it’s a neurological condition affecting over 50 million people worldwide, including children.

Epilepsy happens when abnormal electrical activity in the brain causes recurrent, unprovoked seizures. These seizures may look dramatic (convulsions), but many are subtle—like brief staring spells, muscle jerks, or loss of awareness.

 What causes epilepsy in children?

 It can stem from:

  • Genetic differences
  • Birth injuries or lack of oxygen
  • Brain infections (like meningitis)
  • Head trauma or structural brain abnormalities

With the right treatment plan, children with epilepsy can:

  • Go to school
  • Play, learn, and explore
  • Lead healthy, meaningful lives

As a pediatric neurologist, I’ve seen firsthand how early diagnosis, medication, and lifestyle support can change everything. But stigma often delays care.

Let’s change that—together.

Children with epilepsy need understanding, not fear.
