I use rule of 3 (Sohal’s Rule of 3) to use Rescue medication
1. A prolonged seizure lasting more than/equal to 3 mins)
2. OR 3 short seizures less than 3 mins in 24 hours
Common Emergency Medications:
- Intranasal Midazolam
- Buccal Midazolam
- Rectal Diazepam
Keep the Person Safe and in Recovery Position
Lay them on their side to prevent choking (recovery position)
Protect their head from injury
Loosen tight clothing around the neck
Do not restrain them or put anything in their mouth
Call Emergency Services If Needed
Call an ambulance if:
- The seizure lasts more than 5 minutes
- No rescue medicine is available
- They have multiple seizures without recovery
- They have trouble breathing or get injured
