Working Memory: The Hidden Brain Skill Behind Learning, Attention, and Following Instructions

“I just told you to do that!”

If you’ve ever found yourself saying these words, you’re certainly not alone.

Perhaps you asked your child to put away their shoes, wash their hands, and bring their water bottle.

A few minutes later, the shoes are still by the door, the water bottle is nowhere to be found, and your child is happily doing something completely different.

It’s easy to think they weren’t paying attention. But very often, the problem isn’t listening. It’s something called working memory.

As a pediatric neurologist, I think working memory is one of the most overlooked skills in child development. Parents hear plenty about intelligence, attention, and memory, but working memory supports almost everything children do, from learning in the classroom to following everyday instructions at home.

 

What is working memory?

Working memory is sometimes described as the brain’s mental workspace. Unlike long-term memory, which stores information for days, months, or even years, working memory temporarily holds information while the brain actively uses it.

Think of it like the sticky notes on your desk. They hold important information just long enough for you to complete a task before making room for something new.

For children, working memory is constantly at work.

It’s what helps them:

  • remember a teacher’s instructions while completing an activity
  • solve a maths problem in their head
  • keep track of the beginning of a sentence while reading the end
  • remember what they wanted to say during a conversation
  • follow a sequence of daily tasks

Without us even realizing it, working memory is involved in hundreds of small moments every day.

 

Why does it matter so much?

Working memory sits at the centre of learning. When children learn something new, they don’t immediately store it in long-term memory. First, the information has to pass through working memory.

If that mental workspace becomes overloaded, learning becomes much more difficult. This is why children with weaker working memory may appear to understand something one moment but struggle to remember it a few minutes later.

It isn’t because they aren’t trying. Their brain simply couldn’t hold onto the information long enough to use it effectively.

What happens inside the brain?

Working memory depends on a network of brain regions rather than a single “memory centre.”

The prefrontal cortex, located just behind the forehead, plays a particularly important role. This area helps us hold information in mind, focus attention, plan, organise, and resist distractions. It works closely with other parts of the brain, including the parietal cortex, which helps process and manipulate information.

These networks continue developing throughout childhood and adolescence, which is one reason younger children naturally have a smaller working memory capacity than older children and adults.

In other words, expecting a five-year-old to remember a long list of instructions isn’t always realistic. Their brain is still building that ability.

Signs your child may be struggling with working memory

Working memory difficulties don’t always look obvious. Instead, they often show up in everyday situations.

You might notice that your child:

  • forgets multi-step instructions
  • loses track halfway through a task
  • frequently asks for reminders
  • leaves homework unfinished because they forgot the next step
  • struggles to copy information from the classroom board
  • loses belongings regularly
  • starts telling a story but forgets what they wanted to say

These behaviours are often misunderstood as carelessness or poor motivation. In reality, the child’s mental workspace may simply be overloaded.

 

Is this the same as ADHD?

Not necessarily. Working memory and attention are closely related, but they are not the same thing.

Many children with ADHD have working memory difficulties because both rely on the brain’s executive functioning networks. However, not every child with poor working memory has ADHD, and not every child with ADHD experiences the same level of working memory challenges.

Other factors, including poor sleep, anxiety, stress, learning difficulties, or simply being asked to process too much information at once, can also affect working memory.

This is why understanding the whole child is so important.

 

How can parents support working memory?

The encouraging news is that small changes can make everyday life much easier for children.

1.Keep instructions short. 

Instead of giving five tasks at once, break them into one or two simple steps.

2.Ask your child to repeat instructions back to you. 

This isn’t a test, it helps strengthen the brain’s ability to hold onto new information.

3.Use visual supports. 

Checklists, pictures, calendars, and routines reduce the amount of information children have to keep in their minds.

4.Create predictable routines.

When everyday tasks become habits, the brain no longer needs to rely so heavily on working memory.

5.Allow processing time. 

Some children simply need a few extra moments to organise the information before responding.

And don’t forget the basics. Good sleep, regular physical activity, balanced nutrition, and opportunities for focused play all support healthy brain development and executive functioning.

One of the most important things I want parents to remember is this: Children rarely wake up intending to forget instructions or make life difficult. More often than not, they are doing the best they can with a brain that is still developing. 

Working memory is one of those invisible skills we don’t often think about until it isn’t working as well as we’d expect. The next time your child forgets what you just asked them to do, pause before assuming they weren’t listening.
