Is Your Child’s Working Memory Overloaded?

Working memory helps children hold information in their minds and use it while completing a task. When it becomes overloaded, everyday activities can suddenly feel much harder.

Signs to Look Out For

Your child may be struggling with working memory if they:

  • Forget instructions with several steps
  • Lose track of what they’re doing halfway through a task
  • Frequently need reminders
  • Leave homework unfinished because they forget the next step
  • Find it difficult to copy information from the classroom board
  • Frequently misplace books, toys, or other belongings
  • Start explaining something but forget what they wanted to say

How Can Parents Help?

1. Keep instructions simple
Give one or two steps at a time instead of several instructions together.

2. Ask them to repeat it back
Having your child repeat an instruction helps them hold the information in mind.

3. Make information visible
Checklists, pictures, calendars, and visual routines can reduce the load on working memory.

4. Build predictable routines
When everyday activities become familiar habits, children don’t have to remember every step consciously.

5. Give them a little extra time
Some children need a few extra seconds to process information, organise their thoughts, and respond.

Healthy brain development is supported by good sleep, regular physical activity, balanced nutrition, focused play, and consistent routines.
