What are the Three Easy Way to Abort a Prolonged Seizure ?

I use rule of 3 (Sohal’s Rule of 3) to use Rescue medication

1. A prolonged seizure lasting more than/equal to 3 mins)
2. OR 3 short seizures less than 3 mins in 24 hours

Common Emergency Medications:

  • Intranasal Midazolam
  • Buccal Midazolam
  • Rectal Diazepam

Keep the Person Safe and in Recovery Position

Lay them on their side to prevent choking (recovery position)
Protect their head from injury
Loosen tight clothing around the neck
Do not restrain them or put anything in their mouth

Call Emergency Services If Needed

Call an ambulance if:

  • The seizure lasts more than 5 minutes
  • No rescue medicine is available
  • They have multiple seizures without recovery
  • They have trouble breathing or get injured
