Sensory Overload May Elevate Heart Rates in Autistic Children

Did you know that sensory overload in children with autism can raise their heart rate as much as physical exercise ?

Brain-imaging and physiological studies show that bright lights, loud sounds, strong smells, or even crowded places can trigger a stress response in the nervous system.

To a child on the spectrum, these sensations don’t feel “mild” or “in the background.”

They can feel intense, overwhelming, and impossible to filter out.

When we understand this, our approach shifts from discipline to support.

What helps?

  • Small sensory breaks like stepping away, lowering noise, offering headphones
  • Predictable routines
  • A calm corner or safe space
  • Soft lighting and reduced clutter

These little adjustments can regulate the nervous system and help a child feel safe again.

Have you noticed moments when your child seems overwhelmed by sounds, lights, or crowds?
